One of my favorite subjects in my work is the great Chief Issapóómahksika, known in English as "Crowfoot." Issapóómahksika was was a chief of the Siksika First Nation, one of the four tribes of the Blackfoot Confederacy. When referencing photographs for use in my work, it is extremely uncommon to find people smiling. Issapóómahksika was a rare exception in that his personality somehow finds its way through the grainy sepia tones of those old images. From his subtle smile to his hawklike gaze while smoking his pipe, I find myself wishing to be seated across from him in the lodge 150 years ago, listening to him retell his many adventures as a warrior, diplomat, and leader. It is my honor to have had one of my early portraits of Issapóómahksika find a home with one of his Great Grandsons, who like his ancestor, holds the title of Chief of the Siksika Nation. My art has connected me with many incredible people, and I consider myself truly blessed to have the support of Chief Ouray Crowfoot.
